Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood not only warms your home but also reduces creosote buildup in your chimney.

The Importance of Seasoned Firewood

Seasoned firewood has been dried for at least six months to reduce its moisture content. This type of wood burns hotter and cleaner, producing less smoke and creosote, a tar-like substance that can cause chimney fires.

Freshly cut or 'green' wood contains a lot of moisture, leading to more smoke and creosote buildup, making your chimney dirtier and more dangerous.

Hardwoods vs. Softwoods

Hardwoods, like oak and maple, are dense and burn longer, providing steady heat and less creosote. This makes them ideal for indoor fireplaces where efficiency and cleanliness are important.

Softwoods, such as pine, burn faster and can create more creosote. They're best used as kindling to start a fire, but not as the primary source of fuel for cleaner, safer burning.

Storing Firewood Properly

Proper storage is key to keeping firewood dry. Stack it off the ground with gaps between logs for airflow, and cover the top to protect from rain, leaving the sides open.

Wood should be stored away from the house to avoid pests and ensure it's fully dry, ready to burn efficiently and cleanly when you need it.
